The Kannibal and I went muddin' and did grass (corn stock) drags in the Little Falls area yesterday to the tune of 85 miles.  Not nearly as fun as it sounds.  We did find a couple of miles that were decent, but it was 6 feet here, 10 feet there, for a total of 2 miles.  Overall, not working and the $1 hamburgers offset the crappy conditions.

warm temps have not helped the central part of the state out.  Mostly fine still but some areas the trail is beat down to dirt again.  The trails are seeing much more traffic this year than recent years in this riders opinion possible explanation being early snow leading locals to prepare their stuff early in the season anticiapting a long season instead of waiting for the big storms in Feb.  could use lower temps and more snow for sure

Where to start?  The weekend before Christmas I went down to Winona to ride the bluffs, it was pretty much excellent with a little snirt mixed in on the top of the bluffs (it must have blown off because the hills and valleys were great).

Weekend after Christmas went to Alexandria (free place to stay) and pounded the tar out of the drifts, another excellent trip.

New Years weekend took the wife on a "Freeze your rear off" tour of Alexandria area (still a free place to stay) and due to the incredible cold we saw less than 30 sleds in 3 days of riding and 330+ miles.

A week ago went with a few buddies to Vernon Center (SW of Mankato) and tried to pound ditches but they were too set up so we ended up on the trails.  Who knew South Central MN had trails that wound thru the woods and went up and down hills?  (Who knew they had woods or hills?)  Ended up being one of the best weekends of a great year as the conditions were fantastic with all the snow they've rec'd this year, much of it only 3-4 days old when we hit it.

This past weekend the wife and I headed out to Pine City on late Saturday for a quick 80 clicks.  Sounds a lot like what ALA found around Little Falls, needs more snow.  We did find EXCELLENT conditions in St. Criox State Park, too bad getting to and from the park was poor/fair at best.  Sunday we started out at Banning State Park just off 35 and headed East.  The first 15 miles was much like our Pine City ride on Saturday but once we got into the Nemadji State Forest things turned for the better.  We worked our way north and eventually ended up in Duluth where we grabbed a room at the Willard Munger Inn after about 120 miles, 70 of which were an 8 or 9, 40 of which were 7 and the first 15 which were between a 3 and 5.

Monday we got up, rode a bit on the "missing link trail" around Duluth and then took the Munger to Carlton where we hung a left towards Wrenshall as we wanted to get back into the Nemadji for our trip home.  Somewhere I missed a turn (like that's never happened before) and we ended up in Wisconsin, about 15 miles into Wisconsin (hey, the trail was good so I didn't worry about it).  Eventually we saw a sign telling us we were 6 miles from Superior.  Opps, where did I put that WI trail sticker again?  We grabbed a right and headed south eventually crossing a rail grade that said Moose Lake 36 miles.  By the time we got to the Nemadji turn off we were about 90 minutes behind schedule and decided to skip it and take the Soo grade into Moose Lake where we grabbed the Munger and headed back to the trailer.  Thanks to some help from the law enforcement officials (they weren't out Monday) we made up for lost time and got back to the truck at 3:30, only 30 minutes later than planned.  (running a grade vs twisty trails will do that as well as a little extra throttle)  Overall conditions were best Monday (nothing less than a 7, mostly 8 or 9) but that's because 90% of what we rode was old rail grade, I'd take a trail in the woods 9 of 10 times over a grade but Monday ended up being the exception given my missed turn.

All in all another 330 miles behind us on the weekend and we only saw 50-60 sleds the whole time, crazy.  Monday we did 125 miles and saw 15 sleds, 4 cross country skiers, 6 hikers/walkers and 2 dog sled teams.  Oh, and a new one for me, we had to stop for a cow on the trail.  He wouldn't move so I got way off to the side and went around, my wife said he took a few steps towards me as I went by and did a little snort but I'm here so all is good.

I'm probably going to take the next two weekends off, not looking like enough time this weekend as the good snow is getting to be too far away and the last weekend in Jan I'll be showing the Mormons of Utah how to drink  occasion14 (and they'll be showing me how to ski, hoping to squeeze in a day on the sled as well).

I'm still hoping for a trip to ATL later this season but the calendar isn't doing a good job of cooperating just yet, let's hope a weekend opens up in late Feb early March and I still have $30-$40 left in the snowmobile budget...  dontknow

Mr. "Click" and myself did some riding yesterday in the Olgilvie / Isle area and the trails were groomed. Some dirt corners and rough areas here and there but overall not a bad ride. They definetly need more snow, but again for the snow that was there it was rideable.

Didn't get to ride any this week. Had meetings, training for 3 days for work, but did run the groomer over part of our trails on Monday and other than a couple brown spots across plowed cornfields the trails in Mcleod co, Hutchinson area are in great condition. From a groomer drivers standpoint they are the best trails we've had for 5 yrs. not like riding in the ATL area, but better than sitting home in front of the tv.

So where to start with this, all the information I have is a little outdated now because of the recent/current snowfalling throughout the state but I'll give my opinion anyway.
Rode 422 miles saturday from Zimmerman to Ash River.
Trails from Zimmerman to Ogilvie fair condition, flat could use the snow they are recieving for sure though

Ogilvie to Isle good condition, little bumpy coming through wooded areas but that'll happen with ppl on and off the throttle so much, so to be expected

Soo Line, fantastic flat as a highway really can make time on this trail

Mcgrath to Floodwood good condition once again any railroad grade is flat as it can be, use em if youre not looking for the scenic route, trails were a little bumpier then from Ogilvie to Isle but not surprising considering snow volume is higher through this area leading to more rider traffic. Most riders of any segment of the trip seen in this segment (5).

Floodwood to Hibbing, very quick, easy riding, Hwy 2 railroad grade flat, trail along powerpoles flat, some crossings a little tight but plenty of room for one way traffic

Hibbing to Chisholm I know its not that long a ride through here but still, pretty decent riding

Chisholm to Cook, Pretty beat in some areas Taconite was great, made it easy on a tiring body, Wolf Track trail was pretty decent, better than expected.

Cook to Vermillion, Arrowhead through here was probably the roughest riding of the whole trip and thats not saying it was terrible it had its moments though, could definatly tell this trail has seen traffic recently but still its been worse in the past and could definatly have been worse then.

Vermillion to Crane, Always like this ride from a little before Vermillion all the way to the Crane turn off, up and down and good scenery, but thats not what youre interested in hearing the conditions of, the trail was pretty good better once you hit the turn off , must have been a club or something in Orr recently.

Crane to the Ash river by Lake was as expected flat, pretty hardpacked but that will change with new snow and colder consistent temps as will all this info, the snow is going to help all these trails out most of them were groomed but who knows how long ago there just hasent been any traffic on anything for the most part. I could tell in a few spots that I was for sure one of the first five sleds in either direction since the last grooming.  The trails are ready and with the snow its only going to get better. As anyone would expect snow level increased with northerly latitude and I don't expect that to change and trail marking and maintainance was most definatly better the further north I went.  Not to bash any trails but we all know where the best ones to ride are.

Hope this helps get ya off the couch and out riding cause everyone else is thinkin everyone else is out there riding too.  Theres plenty of trail for all of us.  Wish I would have remembered to take some helpful pictures but when you forget the cam what can you do but say "Next time".   icon_thumright
